A szerzők a neves magyar filatélista, Térfi Béla (1869–1959) – Bélyegmúzeumban őrzött – bélyeg előtti levelekből és borítékokból álló, 2800 darabos gyűjteményének vízjeleit dolgozták fel. A ritka és értékes kollekció a XVIII. század közepétől a XIX. század közepéig tartó időszak európai és magyar vízjelanyagát reprezentálja. A különleges posta-, filatélia-, papír- és vízjeltörténeti jelentőségű vízjelrajz-katalógus a 200 legérdekesebb és legszebb Térfi-vízjelet mutatja be. Különleges keresztmetszetét adja a kor széles körben ismert és keresett vízjel-szimbólumainak. Az eredeti méretben és látványhűen rekonstruált vízjelrajzok között megtalálhatók az ország-, város-, család-, papírkészítő-  és papírmalom-címerek, híres uralkodók portré-vízjelei, egyedi monogram-vízjelek, szépen ívelt, művészi kivitelű állati, növényi és virág-motívumok, világi, egyházi és vallási tárgyú vízjel-jelképek, mitológiai, név-, felirat-, minőségjelző- és papírtípus-vízjelek, hírneves magyar és külföldi papírkereskedők monogram- és név-vízjelei és néhány történelmi magyar papírmalom korábban ismeretlen, eddig nem közölt vízjele is. A látványos vízjelrajz-katalógus kronológiai sorrendben mutatja be a Térfi-gyűjtemény bélyeg előtti leveleiből válogatott vízjeleket. Minden papírról és vízjelről számos fontos információt olvashatunk a rajzok mellett. Szerepel a katalógus oldalakon az adott  papír állagának, típusának, alapszínének, méretének, a papírháttérnek és a papírszélek állapotának leírása, a merítőszita bordázatának típusa, a főbordatérközök adata, a levél nyelvének megnevezése, a levelezés minden ismert postai adata: ki küldte, honnan-hová küldték, és más egyéb postai jelzés, mint például ex offo, franco. Fel van tüntetve a vízjelmotívum megnevezése, leírása, vízjel-elemeinek definiálása, a vízjel befoglaló mérete, a vízjelet készítő papírmalom és a papírkészítőmester neve is.

A speciális katalógusban és témakörben való eligadozást ajánlott irodalom, név-és tárgymutató, filigranológiai szakkifejezések magyarázata, és kronológiai gyorskereső segíti. Magyarországon eddig nem jelent meg még hasonló jellegű feldolgozás, ezért ajánlom minden vízjelek iránt érdeklődő figyelmébe. 

The Térfi-watermarks

We have processed and made a catalogue of special and rare watermarks and the pre-stamp-letter collection preserved in the Stamp Museum, on the occassion of the famous Hungarian philatelist, dr. Béla Térfi's 140th anniversary of birth and 50th of death.
 Dr. Béla Térfi did research on postal history for 50 years. By documenting the collected Hungarian pre-stamp-letters, he mainly aimed to preserve and methodize, catalogue the different left postal stamps and notices on the paper of letters and envelopes. Térfi-collection, which consists of almost 2800 pre-stamp-letters, belongs to the treasures of Stamp Museum.
 This is unvaluable from the point of view of both philately, postal history, and paper- and watermark history. Watermarks of several famous European and Hungarian paper mills can be found in the papers of letters and envelopes in an excellent collection.
 Among the letters, various in size, there are many fullsized moulded-sheets and in them one can find whole watermark figures in original size, which remained in a good condition.
 The full paper-sheets and  reconstructable watermark pairs from both half-sheet give an opportunity for us to identify and determine unknown papermills, papermakers, papermerchants and watermarks.
 For Hungarian paper and watermark history, the existence, processing and scientific documentation of Térfi-watermarks is very important.
 Result of the research work is about 1200 pieces of drawn watermarks, and from the whole material 60 % is Hungarian, 40 % is European.
 Térfi-collection, which consists of letters from the 18th and 19th centuries, represents paper with watermark between 1718 and 1850. This period is the great age of European and Hungarian watermark and papermaking/manufacturing.
 In the Hungarian Kingdom there operated 170 papermills and paper factories in this period, and made many kinds of papers with watermark.
 We can make a statement based on our two-year-long research work that Térfi-watermarks show a characteristics of watermark making in Europe and in Hungary, furthermore, of the old watermark motives.
 The collection is also important with a point of view of the number and interesting content of watermarks.
 There are spectacular coat-of-arm-watermarks of countries and families, portrait-watermarks of emperors, rare monogram-watermarks and nice artistic animal-, floral-, mythological, and large sized type-watermarks.
 Beside them, there are several special watermark-memories of paper history in small or fragmented papers. For example, monogram and name-watermarks of the less known paper mills and paper makers, notice-watermarks unknown thus far, papertype watermarks of famous foreign and Hungarian paper merchants.
 Some of the watermarks represent special ecclesiatic and biblical histories and symbol-watermark of secular contents. These were well-known and popular in their own age, but they have been forgotten by this time. The book introduces the watermark draughts to scale and sight, reconstructed from the pre-stamp-letters of Térfi-collection in chronological order.
 It's an individual philatelistic and postal historic watermark catalogue with abundant detailed information about every paper and watermark. In Hungary, similar book hasn't been published yet. The book specifies paper- quality,  paper type, base-colour, size, paper background and condition of the paper sides.
 Mould type, data of mould, watermark size, motive and its description, definition of its elements are given.
 We can find the names of papermills and papermakers (when they are known), furthermore the language of the letter, postal data of letters (who sent, where from-to) and other postal signs typical of the age (for example: ex offo, franco, recommandirt).
